Biosecurity: know before you go

Knowing the spirit of our industry and our people, we know you’ll want to do everything you can to reduce the impact of competing in Perth and enjoying Western Australia. Please take time to read about these important notices about biosecurity and conduct around ATCC 2027.

Polyphagous shot-hole borer is a biosecurity problem in Perth

 Learn the signs of the presence of Polyphagous shot-hole borer (Euwallacea fornicatus) in Western Australia.

How you can be prepared before you arrive in Perth:

  • Disinfect pruning tools to minimise the chance of transferring diseases.

  • 70% ethanol is the preferred disinfectant.

  • Avoid moving plant material or wood products from known PSHB infestation areas.

  • Download the MyPestGuide® Reporter app and if you see signs of PSHB or any other pests report them as soon as possible. Please include a photo of the suspected borer activity (with a ruler or pen for scale).

General Biosecurity Measures a Good Arborist Should Take

The MIS 308 Tree Pruning has a section called Biosecurity measures (under the 3. Conduct Pruning heading) which is very helpful and worth reviewing in terms of best practice for cleaning to avoid inadvertently spreading pests and diseases. Please review this in relation to competing or volunteering at ATCC 2027.

Clean On / Clean Off procedure:

Pests, weeds and diseases can be transferred from one property to the next on shoes, equipment and vehicles, and in contaminated mulch or other debris. The Clean On / Clean Off procedure is designed to ensure you are not inadvertently spreading pests from one property to the next.

Hygiene kit

  • Plastic bags and cable-ties or duct tape for disposal

  • Plastic tarp

  • Tub with 10% Phytoclean sanitizer

  • Tub with water

  • Disposable gloves

  • Alcohol wipes

  • Stiff-bristle brush

  • Spray bottle with 7/3 ethanol/water solution

  • Screwdriver

Clean your gear (incl. kit bag), equipment, and clothing (incl. pockets) before departing for the ATCC event in Perth. Arrive clean.
